This scene is from the School House Beach in the Bodega Bay area; it is typical of the rugged Northern  California coastline and inspires one to keep going back for more.

In 1997 I traveled through Italy with a tour group. We spent one day in Venice. Back home I worked from a 35 mm slide. One of my art instructors told me that I was way over my head on this project. He was right. Up to that time all I had ever painted were portraits and still life. I worked on it from time to time for several years. It has been pointed out that in the painting some of the buildings are a little crooked or slanted. Those who have been in the area know that Venice was built on landfills and for years many of the buildings have been held together by huge steel braces and various other supports.
Point Lobos

"Point Lobos," 24" x 30," Oil on Linen

This is my first seascape painting, done years after a visit to the Carmel area. Using photographs as resources for painting has many pitfalls. It was only after the move to Marin and more frequent opportunity to visit some of the beaches and to study the pattern of the waves that I dared to take up the challenge.
Tugboats

"Tugboats are In," 8" x 10," Oil on Panel

In the 1990's I attended summer sessions at Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore about every other year. The little painting was done during class outings to the Inner Harbor in two 3 hour sessions.
